When the Weathers right, there is Great Surfing down in Porto Da Cruz, used regularly by the locals and they should know the best spot on the Island.
Take care of the rocks and the strong current.. no lifeguards here.
For accommodation, there are houses to rent locally, we used www.madeiramagic.com which was just perfect,, on the hill overlooking the town, and a great little bar right next door !
