Atmosphere

I was lucky enough to be in Liberia in a quiet time and got to surf Mumba with the only other surfers in the country...a Peace Corps worker and
some Dutch guy who lived there. Actually quite a fun wave with potential to be big and knarly. Water was warm and the sets were quite regular.
I had two days of waves before the swell disappeared.

General

If you go there and the swell is up then go out
even if it is just so you can say you surfed there.

Hard Work - Like swimming upstream in a river.  Worth it whe we got to the point, but every wave meant another 20 min.+ paddle back to the point.  Ouch.  Don't know if it was the swell size that made this rip or how low the tide was, but it wa

Frustrating - TIDE WAS WAY TOO HIGH!!!  1.5 m, said the chart.  Swell was nice 6-7ft, but only broke on the rocks.  Horrible day.  Got bashed and cut up trying to get out on the rocks by sister Dorothy's place and bashed the nose of my boar

Wow - This was a session of a lifetime.  Had a 300+m ride.  The inside section was walling up like crazy and so fast.  Had to hurry like h*&! to make it past some sections and got barreled and covered up for a few seconds.  The latt

Glad the place is still there - I was in Monrovia for a month or so in 03 carrying food aid. I caught Mamba and a couple of other close totown spots pretty good. The people were really nice considering what was going on. I made some pretty good friends and got to surf by myself. I got reeeeealy sick a month or so after I got home. Some sort of parisite my doctor said. I was on Flagly? (the strongest antibiotic for parisites) for a couple of weeks. I surfed that nasty beach break south of the point everybody shits on a few times, so I guess I had it coming. If any Liberians read this could you please check on Mamasam. She's an old lady that has a bar/snack shack on the main road just north of the main port entrance. She has a little monkey and was obsessed with watching the old re-runs of "Dallas". Tell her that Tom Sattelite asked about her. The working girls wouldn't leave me alone so I told them that my wife worked for the CIA and was watching me with a spy sattelite. I was joking but it worked. Thus the name. World class surf when on. World class nasty water all day long.
