Mixed reviews Was here in ES in 1998/9.Good waves when they came. Some locals helped me out, place to stay...seemed to be re-formed crackheads / born again christians. Cool enough.Got ill with the shits.Stayed in Posada Familia.Played it safe.Think everyone should really.Got a lift with a local one evening and hit a drunk on the bridge.Hard.Shocking.No-one cared. But the waves were fun, PR barelled alot.Great experience, but was glad to get out too!!!Be a shame for the country to slide, i was told Britain helped screw the place over too...so maybe everyone should tread lightly here and drop the ego / pride thing.

Get an experienced local guide !! There are good , consistent waves all around the area. If it's your first time there, you need to use a guide. There are many bilingual local surfers who work as surf guides and will keep you out of trouble and know where to take you for good waves and clean water. The petty crime tends to be prety well contained to the port town of La Libertad, where there tourists are an easier target. Being accompanied by a guide will make your experience much more enjoyable and a lot easier.

punta roca perfection surfed eg Bodyboarded Punta roca yesterday 7.00 am perfect 8 ' 10 ' waves LIKE INDO conditions almost no wind 3 mph 5 feet swell 18 seconds end of incoming high tide very good surf for 2 hours only 6 people out . The place is not dangerous at all, unless you dont walk around there alone at night to buy weed, locals were really nice if you go during the week you ll get enough waves.

punta roca don't go there I was in el salvador for a week last summer. Surfed punta roca twice. The first session we surfed the inside point called La Paz by the town beach. It was just me and my friend and two local guys. They vibed us a little but were overall pretty cool. The second session we surfed the main point. We were first chased off the rocks by the local crack heads and then I was punched by one of the local gangster types in the water for no apparent reason. That same day a guy from Brazil broke his board and the little crack gang took his nose and made the guy give them the other half of his board. Also an oblivious japanese girl got her camera equipment stolen. I don't recommend El Salvador. If you go don't waist your time in La Libertad. Spend your money in areas that do a better job making their town or village hospitible. From the second we entered La Libertad we were accosted by crack heads asking for money and an overall bad vibe. I recommend staying north of La Libertad. The hotel Roca Sunzal is a really nice place with a good vibe and a cool little village. There is a right point there called Sunzal that it pretty fun and seems to be able to hold a sizable swell. I also recommend El Zonte. It is more of a little cove with a right that breaks off the little point. It is a fun wave at about head high to a little over but the cove seems to be to small to hold anything larger and turns into a washing machine with back wash etc when it is big. The vibe here is good and if you are in el salvador i recommend checking the waves here.

Been there, done that The wave at Punta Roca can be excellent. But almost everything about La Liberatad makes it worth missing for better, friendly locations. I've traveled there every year for the last 12, and I've made my last visit. That town is nothing more than beaten-down crack-whore, and the cops and the guys running the businesses there (you know who you are) just look the other way. I guess I can't blame them. If I lived there all my life I'd want teh surf to be less crowded too......

YOU ARE A CHICKEN SHIT WE HAVE KNOWN A LOT OF PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT PLACES, AND THEY HAVE GOOD COMENTS ABOUT THE WAVES IN PUNTA ROCA ,IT CAN BE DANGERUOS BUT THERE IS A LOT OF PLACES THAT ARE DANGERUOS TOO . I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF PRO SURFERS THAT HAVE WRITTEN DOWN VERY GOOD COMENTS ABOUT THE WAVES IN DIFERENT SURF MAGAZINES ANYWAY THE POINT IS THAT PUNTA ROCA IS NOT A PLACE FOR BACKPACKERS IS A PLACE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SURF AND WANT TO FIND GOOD WAVES, MAYBE YOU CAN GET SICK BUT THAT CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE SO IF YOU DONT LIKE STAY IN EUROPE AND USA . WE DONT NEED YOU GUYS .DONT COME OVER AND CONTAMINATE OUR PLACES STILING OUR WAVES ,WE HAVE TO MANY ALREADY AND WE DONT NEED REDNECKS HENSHIT ,THAT COME OVER TO MAKE BAD COMMENTS ABOUT OUR PLACES STAY OUT OF IT

Fond memories Reading about all the violence saddens me, as I had the good fortune of probably being one of the first to surf Punta roca in 1972. Usually got in the water right before you could see, around 5 am. Always a dirty place, I had ameobas for 1 yr.My friend Bob Rotherham and others got malaria, hepatitis. We did live in a place called gringo gardens, rented a house for $80 month. Wound up staying almost 5 yrs. Too many other places in the world now to deal with this shit.

Gangs and drugs Punta Roca is home to violent gangs and drug related violence. When I was robbed I thought I was lucky to get away alive. But I went back and I was robbed again. I am 6'4" 210lbs, yellowing board, no watch, old trunks did not matter. I saw a group of gringos with a guide and they were all robbed too. The guide was afraid to go there but the guys wanted to so he went but when the gang came out of the bush he gave up his phone and cash. I have been a lot of places but this one is too far gone to go back

Good point but? But I got hepatitus and I know it was there cause it was the only place we surfed and a guy i met there from jersey got it also. So damn sick that surfing seemed unimportant that whole month. feces galor. The people that surf it regularly should be science experiments for Immune system research. Yellow man they call me.
