 Parana

Brazil

Together with Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, Parana makes up the Southern region of Brazil. The land is prosperous, and has been through a great deal of change in the last few decades. An essentially agrarian economy in the 70’s, it has developed into one of the country's strongest industrial states, while still being the largest grain producer/exporter. The progress did not come for free though, and most common urban problems in Brazil arose in the process (crime is on the rise and slums popping up in big cities).

The touristic highlights are the famous Iguacu Falls, the modern capital Curitiba, the Curitiba-Antonina dramatic train ride, and the Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) – where some of the best surf is to be found.

Surfwise, it is not as blessed as its neighboring States, but some good waves can be enjoyed. Beware the weather in winter, especially if you decide to go inland (regular frosts) – the coast is warmer although a good raincoat and a warm wetsuit are always recommended.
