Mahia/Raglan...the way it was - Kevin @ Jacky Cramer picked me up at Wellington From South Africa in 1972. We lived in tents under a (sometimes) waterfall at #3 reef,surfed Blacks,Point anihilation,Rolling Stones,Beach breaks at Mahia Beach, Boat Harbor and of course Last Chance. I lived in Jeffreys Bay from 1969 thru 1972 when it started to change into Surfing Mecca "to be" shared years of good waves with a few locals and cool Aussies ALSO atMahia and Raglan.Wonderful amazing times and people.apparently it has turned into a heavy uptight spot with the locals ruling the shores...Glad I was blessed to live there with the incredible Maori friends and when we were the locals. It was such a spiritualy charged place. THAT was the essence of the Land AND the Waves

Locals - Rongomaiwahine - The Locals are abit anti tourist, because of their natural "protectiveness" of the land and sea. This is how they are raised. They're there throughout the entire year, not just summer. People don't just "fit in" to Mahia. The community is tight. Everyone knows everyone. Learn its history, get to know the Mahia people and next time you're out surfing Blaxs/Last Chance/Stones etc you may not have to worry about who's leaning up against your car watching you surf.
