The spot is located in Ilha Grande, an island off the shore of Angra dos Reis. You should drive to Mangaratiba or Angra from Rio on BR 101. At any of these two towns you can take a ferry to the island. In Abraão, the main beach in the island, where no cars are allowed, you can take a boat to Lopes Mendes. There is also an option of trekking for two hours through some awesome Atlantic Woods forests. Beautifull location, allthought difficult access.
Take the boat in Abraão, it takes you to a nearby beach in 30min. Then a 15min walk takes you to praia Lopes Mendes.
Nice beach, few people, possibility to rent a board.
Localism is there for sure on the main spot, allthought showing respect can give you some more locals friends (who own a transport boat as well;))

Speed Connection - Very beautiful beach! Unfortunately we did not get any waves as small in summer. Warning: Do not go to or from Ilha Grande with company called Speed Connection! They offer combined service for ferry and taxi to or from Rio de Janeiro. Girlfriend and I paid 100 Reais and never were picked up at ferry terminal. Tried to speak with the guy on the phone. He was obviously scamming!!!! Shame as island is amazing!
