This place is hollow and mean. If you fall in the wrong spot you're screwed. The reef slice and dice you. You can get super deep if you're good. Breaks very, VERY, raley. Have fun! Tavarua ! - ! - - so we intended to go to Wilkes Passage given the chances of surfing Restaurants seamed nil. We dropped a couple off there who had been lucky enough to have their names drawn from a hat that morning and could surf the perfect 3 - 6ft Rests! I was totally miffed and had to go to Wilkes by myself... or so I thought, the boat driver got on the radio to the Tavarua guys and suddenly i was allowed to surf! 10 bucks, a bunch of waivers and a little boat ride later - I'm there. That place has the best shaped wave and the take off is easy - if you don't mind looking at a few coral heads just 3m in front of you! It is hollow and shallow and the reef really bites. Everything you read about it being a place to STAY on your board is true - if you fall off and hit the bottom, you will hurt yourself. If you want to surf it - you have to call Tavarua from the surrounding resorts and put your name in a hat just in case someone else who is on the list cancels OR pay the $2500US for a week there and just surf it everyday.CheersJim
