 Additional Information

This strictly a novelty spot: there are makeable waves if there is a strong storm with north winds. I surfed it once in a heavy snowstorm. I have pictures somewhere I'll try to find. You're only hope is for some knee to waist high soft mushburgers with a 30kt onshore wind, but it can be done!

There is loads of parking and no crowd. There might be kiteboarders now, but that hadn't been invented yet when I surfed it.

Watch out for the old pilings sticking up.

Atmosphere

i surfed this a few times this and last year. gotta be an incoming tide during a big n-nw or ne windstorm, or getting lucky with a big freighter wave going south at lower tides. on one epic session in september 06, i surfed 3-4 peaks for nearly 3hrs. steep drops, a few longer rides. hard to catch windwaves, but worth the effort being it's in my hood. a few sketchy shorebreak barrels too. on a strong NE wind after 5pm or weekends, can get super crowded with kite boarders, had to really keep an eye out for the cutting cross my path. no etiquette used by them apparently. not ocean surf for sure, but a novelty wave for those in the city that don't have time to get the real stuff. i was stoked to get nice rides 2mn from my house!

General

hit and miss, but surfable for long boards and kayaks when firing. worth trying out. the rip off the point in deep water south of the buoy is fun too if you have a kayak or tow-in. i've seen 5' faces on big winds and strong opposing currents.

Golden Gardens...really? - If anyone has pics of these "clean, head-high" sets, would love to see them. I've lived there almost my whole life and never seen anything really rideable (and I spent a lot of time drinkin' on that beach before I was old enough to hit up the Sloop). Good on ya if you can say you rode it though!

hmmm - i've been going to golden gardens for 6yrs and never seen it break.

the 'Gardens' was firing Monday - Don't know what did it. Maybe the combo tide and the big northerly wind. Whatever it was made for some clean head-high sets and otherwise four or five hours of consistent waist-high fun. And it was 75 degrees and sunny out! You'd never guess you were a three minute drive from Ballard. Long live the Sloop Tav!
