This coast varys between beach, reef, point and river bar breaks. most consistent swell is from the north east. the inner city beaches only get waves if there is a big troppy ground swell coming down the coast or a N.E to East storm swell created by winds closer to the coast. The beaches picking up swell get more consistent the further north you go as they are out of the shadow of the corramandel, great barrier island and the other islands of the outer hauraki gulf. The main surf beaches atart at Omaha and Takatu point. Omaha dosn't pick up as much swell as beaches further north such as pakiri but takatu picks up all swells coming from the north to N.E directions. Pakiri is the first real open beach facing the north east. beaches from here up to waipu pick up all swells from the N.E to S.E. Can pick up bigger north swells as well. some classic breaks like Te arai point, mangawhai bar, dings, the cove, the groin, omaha bar, and the mythical Milford reef, o'neils and taka north reef dot this coast line. There are still alot of secret spots on this coast that most surfers just drive past without knowing of.
Seasonal swell & wind variations:
The dominant swell in the winter is mainly from north east wind swells coming off the highs that pass over. Some ground swells do reach this coast in the winter from lows that usually pass east of east cape and bring East/South east ground swells if they make it past coramandel. There are afew N.E groundies in the winter as well. During the summer is when the best swells hit. These come off tropical storms to the north/N.E of New Zealand that come down from the tropics. These swells are usually from the N.E or East direction and can range from a good 3-4 feet up to 8-12 feet.

City Beaches - Long Bay,Long Bay Reef, The point, Flat Rock, Waiake Bombora, Rothesay Bay, Mairangi Bay, Campbells Bay, Milford Beach, Milford Reef, O'Neills, North Reef, Takapuna Beach, South Reef, and a few other small oddities are all inner harbour beaches protected by the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, the Islands of the Hauraki Gulf, and the Coromandel Peninsula. When these spots work they can work very well on occasion ranging from six times a year to once every ten years depending on the weather pattern, the season snd the individual spot. So, it isn't Indo. The main attraction is either novelty value or sheer convenience if you're a local. If these spots are surfable then further North is going off, starting from Tawharanui and Omaha and heading further North. Don't hang around the North Shore waiting for a wave, you'll be disappointed. Taking a global perspective as a long time local, I'm surprised the Auckland inner harbour beaches are even listed on this site! (They are fun when they work tho')

Waves on Waiheke?????? - I arrived on Waiheke 6 day's ago and the last 3 days the wind has been howling from the north. Today it is off-shore and nice 3ft punchy beachies and I don't have a board here. Yes, I am spewing. Lesson learnt. Don't go anywhere with out a board.
